Initial reports in the French press suggested that many of the priceless works stored and displayed within had already been removed last week during the renovations, and that the cathedral’s collection of relics and other sacred items, kept in the sacristry, were likely unharmed.

The central spire, roof and much of the interior of the cathedral were obliterated Monday as a catastrophic fire spread within minutes through the building, which has stood at the heart of Paris for more than 800 years. Officials say that the iconic twin towers that frame the building’s entry have been saved, and that the exterior structure of the cathedral has been preserved. But cathedral spokesman Andre Finot told French media that the building had sustained “colossal damage”.
